Much like their descendants today, schoolchildren of 1930s Vietnam also took art classes as part of their syllabus. In this rare collection of what was essentially our grandparents\u2019 homework, we can surprisingly learn a lot about the daily life of Mekong Delta residents from nearly 100 years ago.<\/em><\/p>\n

Art is a crucial subject in assisting the development of a young child\u2019s sense of aesthetics, even though not every pupil is excited by drawing lessons. During these hands-on hours, students not only learn how to record what they observe on paper, but also how to appreciate art and life.<\/p>\n

Just by flicking through these intricate art assignments by students of the \u00c9cole Primaire de Long Xuy\u00ean in 1930, one can feel the pulse of life imbued in every household object and scene portrayed. The scans were archived by the\u00a0French National Museum of Education<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Long Xuy\u00ean County (as it was then called) received its first administrative designation in the 1860s\u20131870s. In 1900, Long Xuy\u00ean became a province, consisting of three districts: Ch\u00e2u Th\u00e0nh, Th\u1ed1t N\u1ed1t, and Ch\u1ee3 M\u1edbi. In 1917, Governor-General Albert Sarraut issued the General Regulation of Education in January 1917, allowing Long Xuy\u00ean as a province to establish public schools \u2014 which led to the birth of \u00c9cole primaire de Long Xuy\u00ean, or Long Xuy\u00ean Primary School.<\/p>\n

In this artwork collection from 1930, students commonly opted for household items in their still life sketches, like areca nut trays, vases, and even one\u00a0ghe h\u1ea7u<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 an ornate pleasure barge used by members of the upper echelons on vacations. One student chose to draw a pair of geckos, which, as\u00a0th\u1eb1n l\u1eb1n<\/em>\u00a0fans at\u00a0Saigoneer<\/em><\/a>, we feel should deserve more than a 7\/10 grade.<\/p>\n

It does come as a surprise when we marvel at these sketches because the level of attention to detail was remarkable. From the vases\u2019 elegant inlaid mother of pearl to regal dragon patterns on trays, the students did a sterling job at capturing the artisanship of past craftsmen in their work. Moreover, by looking at these artworks, we can have a glimpse into the range of home items of past Vietnamese that might longer be in use today, such as the areca nut sets.<\/p>\n

A noticeable motif present in the decorative items that were portrayed by students was the \u201clotus and duck\u201d subject or\u00a0li\u00ean \u00e1p<\/em>\u00a0in Vietnamese. The character for\u00a0\u00e1p<\/em>\u00a0(\u9d28), meaning \u201cduck,\u201d has an element of\u00a0gi\u00e1p<\/em>\u00a0(\u7532), meaning \u201cfirst.\u201d This signifies an aspiration to attain high achievement in academic pursuits.\u00a0Li\u00ean<\/em>\u00a0(\u84ee), meaning \u201clotus,\u201d is a homophone of li\u00ean (\u9023), meaning \u201ccontinuous.\u201d Depictions of \u201clotus and duck\u201d reflect people\u2019s desire to have good luck in their studies and future career.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, one of the most popular subjects is the areca nut and betel leaf kit used by past generations. A set usually has a tray or lidded pot, a pitcher of lime powder, a cutter, a mixing spoon, dried\u00a0thu\u1ed1c x\u1ec9a<\/em>\u00a0leaves, and a spitting bottle.<\/p>\n

In three works by the authors S\u01b0, Hu\u1ef3nh V\u0103n M\u1edbi and K\u1ef3, we can identify some of these instruments in three different styles, all beautifully crafted to showcase their owners\u2019 financial station. In the set drawn by S\u01b0, the exterior of the box is lacquered and embellished with a \u201clotus and duck\u201d scene. For the sets owned by M\u1edbi and K\u1ef3\u2019s families, the receptacles were made of bronze.<\/p>\n

Three sets of different\u00a0tr\u1ea7u cau<\/em>\u00a0utensils show us the diversity and complexity of our ancestors’ areca nut-chewing pastime.<\/p>\n

An areca nut box, or\u00a0c\u01a1i tr\u1ea7u<\/em>, is a multi-component container with a lid, used to store the various tools needed in the consumption of areca nut and betel leaf mixture.\u00a0\u00d4 tr\u1ea7u<\/em>, on the other hand, is simply a hollow cylindrical container where everything is kept. According to Tr\u1ecdng T\u00ednh, a co-founder of history forum \u0110\u1ea1i Nam H\u1ed9i Qu\u00e1n, these setups were usually displayed by wealthy households back then in their living room to flaunt their social status.<\/p>\n

Commenting on this set of artworks, T\u00ednh also noted that the opulent boat drawn by Tr\u1ea7n T\u1ea5n T\u01b0\u1edbc isn\u2019t just any mode of transportation commonly seen now. It\u2019s a\u00a0ghe h\u1ea7u<\/em>, a leisure vehicle reserved for river cruise and is decorated with festive flags, a prominent rudder, and other amenities. Today, not many have survived, though two are still kicking around, including the S\u00e1u B\u1ed5 owned by Tr\u1ea7n V\u0103n Th\u00e0nh, and the S\u1ea5m owned by L\u00ea V\u0103n M\u01b0u, also known as \u00d4ng Tr\u1ea7n.<\/p>\n

Marveling at these art assignments by students in the 1930s Mekong Delta, we get to know a delightful facet of the life of past Vietnamese. Areca nut boxes have largely disappeared from our daily routine, and now mostly exist as artifacts in museums. If you\u2019re lucky, there might be one lurking in a corner of the family living room, waiting to be rediscovered. If not, then you\u2019ll probably have to settle for digital images or one of these detailed sketches by students of the Long Xuy\u00ean Primary School.<\/p>\n
