TRAN LUU HAU (1928 – 2020)
Trần Lưu Hậu (1928–2020) was one of the most influential figures in modern Vietnamese art. He graduated from the final cohort of the École des Beaux-Arts de l’Indochine (1944–1945) and later continued his training at the Resistance Art School during the First Indochina War.
Throughout his long artistic career, Trần Lưu Hậu developed a distinctive style that evolved from realism and expressionism toward abstract and emotive painting. His work is known for its bold color palettes, dynamic forms, and emotionally charged compositions. Even in his most abstract works, traces of Vietnamese nature, landscapes, and everyday life remain visible, grounding his art in a deeply national spirit.
Trần Lưu Hậu held many key positions in the Vietnamese art community. He was a member of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association, a lecturer at the Vietnam University of Fine Arts, and an active contributor to art theory and criticism. His works have been exhibited in major shows both domestically and internationally, and are part of esteemed collections in Vietnam, France, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, and the United States.
With his independent artistic vision, bold experimentation, and constant renewal, Trần Lưu Hậu stands as a powerful symbol of innovation and transformation in modern Vietnamese painting.
