Nguyễn Văn Hải is a prominent young artist of traditional lacquer paintings and graduated from Vietnam University of Fine Arts in 1992. He later became an apprentice of lacquer painters Đỗ Xuân Doãn and Lê Ngọc Linh. Nguyễn Văn Hải inherited lacquer techniques from his teachers, and at the same time, he developed his colors and styles. His realism direction with a slightly modern style seems to enhance lacquer paintings’ lyrical and noble substance. We also see a discreet Asian classic through the artist’s careful appearance of color layering. The nostalgic feelings in black and white landscape lotus pond and Hoàn Kiếm lake will be felt at first sight in the work.
