SLOW LIVING, LIVE IN PRESENT “…is not an exhibition that offers the correct definition of “slow living”, but it aims to highlight the significance of looking inward and living in the present through the artist’s visual language within his portrait and scenery paintings. Most importantly, it allows the audience to consider their own definition of slow living: whether it is about taking care of the soul, finding peace and freedom within themselves, or making time and space for important things that bring happiness in life. ….” said curator An Tran
At Vy Gallery, curator An Tran will introduce new paintings of artist Nguyen Minh Thanh (born 1971) – one of the pioneering artists of Vietnamese contemporary art since the 1990s, through the exhibition Slow living, in the present.
Exhibition will display 9 works by artist Nguyen Minh Thanh from 2011 – 2021, belonging to the collection of Tran Hau Tuan. The exhibition will be opened at Vy Gallery from September 15 to 17, 2023.
After a long period of hustling through life and career, Minh Thanh decided to leave the bustling city and move to Dalat in 2009. Inspired by surrounding nature and practice of meditation, he has been painting with his whole heart and soul without fear of being judged. Looking inward and painting freely is his own way of living in the present, with the goal of achieving freedom and peace – and to him, this is life.
Nguyen Minh Thanh graduated from Vietnam University of Fine Arts in 1996, holding his first exhibition that same year. Going against the majority, he chose installation art as a means of raising a new, unmistakable voice. At that time, he considered himself “reckless” because he dared to take challenges.
His artworks have been included in both public and private collections, such as Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (Japan), National Art Gallery of Queensland (Brisbane, Australia), Post Vidai collection of contemporary Vietnamese art (Switzerland), etc. The artist now lives and works in Hanoi, Vietnam.
